Marcel Bakker specializes in portrait photography. Before starting his career as a photographer, he studied Cultural Anthropology and worked as a photo editor for Amnesty International, Associated Press, Intermediair and the Groene Amsterdammer, among others.
Marcel is known for his powerful portraits as well as light, playful, unposed images. He is always looking for the right light and a special atmosphere to give his portraits an unusual subtle quality. Important to Marcel is the personal connection between him and his subject; an honest and authentic reflection.
In addition to commissioned photography, Marcel works on personal projects in which his academic background is influential. His work is inspired by non-fiction literature and often has a historical angle (such as the Palio, a historic horse race in Siena) or explores the cultural aspects of food (his photo essay on poisonous honey). He has a special interest in "living history," where tradition meets modernity.
